Why Twin-Screw PET Sheet Extruders Perform Better with a Crystallizer

Pairing a twin-screw extruder with a dedicated PET crystallizer is the industry standard for high-quality PET sheet production, as it solves two inherent material challenges: PET’s hygroscopic nature and its tendency to agglomerate at processing temperatures. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the benefits:

1. Prevents Material Blockage & Agglomeration (Anti-Caking)

  • Amorphous PET softens easily: Un-crystallized PET pellets have a low softening point (~70°C). When heated directly for drying, they stick together, forming large clumps that block feed chutes and disrupt material flow.
  • Crystallizer raises the softening temperature: By heating PET to 120–140°C in the crystallizer, the molecular chains rearrange into an ordered structure. This crystallized PET has a much higher softening point, ensuring pellets remain free-flowing during drying and extrusion.

2. Eliminates Hydrolytic Degradation

  • PET absorbs moisture rapidly: Ambient humidity is absorbed into pellets, reaching 0.2–0.5% moisture content.
  • High-temperature hydrolysis: During extrusion (~250–280°C), trapped water causes hydrolytic degradation, breaking PET molecular chains. This drastically reduces intrinsic viscosity (IV), weakening mechanical properties (strength, toughness) and causing surface defects (bubbles, pits).
  • Deep drying: The crystallizer works with a dehumidifying dryer to reduce moisture to ≤30–50 ppm, preventing chain scission and preserving material properties.

3. Enhances Extrusion Stability & Sheet Quality

  • Uniform melting: Crystallized PET melts consistently, stabilizing screw discharge pressure and melt uniformity.
  • Reduced voids/bubbles: Proper crystallization and drying eliminate internal bubbles, producing sheets with high clarity, smooth surfaces, and consistent thickness.
  • Better mechanical properties: Maintains molecular weight, ensuring sheets have excellent tensile strength, impact resistance, and thermoforming performance.

4. Synergy with Twin-Screw Extruders

  • Twin-screw strengths: Strong conveying, mixing, self-cleaning, and vacuum devolatilization.
  • Crystallizer complement: Pre-treats raw material to reduce load on the extruder’s vacuum system, enabling higher throughput, lower energy use, and longer service life.
  • Ideal for recycled PET (rPET): Crystallizers stabilize variable moisture/quality in rPET, making production of high-quality food-grade sheets feasible.

Summary

A crystallizer is not optional but essential for PET sheet extrusion. It prevents agglomeration, eliminates hydrolytic degradation, stabilizes processing, and ensures superior sheet quality—maximizing efficiency, yield, and product performance.
