Vacuum Forming Machine or Multi-Station Thermoforming Machine? A Selection Guide From Shantou Longsheng

The Question Buyers Actually Ask

Both machines heat a plastic sheet and pull it over a mold. The difference is what happens around that step, and that difference determines which products are economic to make.

Shantou Longsheng Industry Co., Ltd. builds both types, so the recommendation usually comes down to the product, not the budget.

How a Vacuum Forming Machine Works

Sheet is clamped, heated, drawn down by vacuum against a single mold, cooled and removed. Forming and unloading happen in sequence at one station. Advantages: low tooling cost, fast setup, and the ability to handle very large parts — refrigerator liners, pallets, thick-gauge industrial shells, sample trays. The trade-off is that cycle time includes manual or semi-automatic handling, and trimming is usually a separate operation.

How a Multi-Station Machine Works

Heating, forming, punching and stacking are separate stations, and the sheet indexes through them. The part is formed and trimmed in the same pass, and finished parts are counted and stacked automatically. Advantages: short cycle times, integrated trimming, high cavity counts, and repeatable stacking for automated packing lines. Tooling is more expensive and changeover takes longer.

Matching Machine to Product

  • Thin-wall cups, lids, clamshells and food trays at high volume — multi-station thermoforming
  • Large industrial shells, thick-gauge panels and low-volume custom parts — vacuum forming
  • Sample and prototype runs before committing to tooling — vacuum forming
  • Formats that need in-line punching and automatic stacking — multi-station thermoforming

Three Questions That Decide It

  1. Is the part trimmed in the machine? If the answer must be yes, multi-station is the route.
  2. How many cavities? Above a few dozen per cycle, multi-station stacking and trimming become essential to cost.
  3. How often does the format change? Frequent low-volume changes favour vacuum forming; long runs of one format favour multi-station.

What Longsheng Supplies Alongside the Machine

Longsheng makes precision molds in-house and also builds sheet extruders — DSI-PP multilayer co-extrusion, the LSI series for PET and PLA with drying and crystallising, and SI-PE for PE sheet — so a converter can align sheet gauge with forming capability. Founded in 1998 in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, the company operates a 30,000 square metre plant, holds 25 authorised patents (1 invention, 24 utility model) and is a high-tech enterprise.
