Protected agriculture and the horticulture industry have turned seedling trays from a seasonal purchase into a year-round consumable. 32-, 50-, 72- and 128-cell trays serve vegetable and flower nurseries, while succulent pots and nursery cups grow with the e-commerce plant trade. Unit value is low, but volumes are large and orders are stable, making this category ideal for thermoforming lines.
Cell Precision Determines Nursery Quality
- Cell taper and pitch must be consistent to match automatic seeding lines; misalignment causes missed seeding
- Drainage holes must be punched clean, without burrs, to prevent root rot
- Flanged edges raise whole-tray stiffness so robot grippers do not deform the tray
Machines and Materials
Longsheng multi-station thermoforming machines form and cut in one cycle, and the molds compensate taper for easy, damage-free demolding. HIPS and PP are the mainstream materials; outdoor use calls for UV-stabilized grades, and European orders increasingly require compostable materials. Longsheng machines process PLA and starch-based sheets as well.
