Shantou Longsheng Guide: Compostable Packaging Certification EN 13432 and ASTM D6400

Certification Is the Ticket to Export Markets

For PLA cups and starch-based containers made in China to enter the EU or US, printing "biodegradable" on the pack is not enough. Buyers ask for the certificate number first; without it, products rarely reach mainstream channels regardless of price.

How the Three Systems Differ

  • EN 13432: the EU industrial composting standard, requiring disintegration within 12 weeks, biodegradation targets within 180 days, plus limits on heavy metals and ecotoxicity
  • ASTM D6400: the US industrial composting standard with similar logic; passing it enables the BPI label, the passport to North American channels
  • Home composting standards (such as OK compost HOME) set harsher, lower-temperature conditions and are harder to pass

How Process Control Supports Certification

Certification applies to materials and products, but process stability directly affects test results: poorly dried PLA hydrolyzes and embrittles, and unstable temperature profiles make starch-based materials fail disintegration tests. The Longsheng LSI series has a built-in drying and crystallizing system, and the patented interval-heating design stabilizes the temperature profile so batches consistently reach test-ready condition.
