Energy Efficiency on Cup Making and Thermoforming Lines: Where the Savings Are

Time: 2026-10-24 10:05:27.291

Energy Is a Per-Thousand-Cups Cost

Machine buyers compare price and speed, then discover that electricity is the largest recurring cost on the line. On a thin-wall cup line, heating and drive power dominate; on a sheet extrusion line, the extruder barrel and the chilling circuit do. Reducing consumption per thousand cups is often easier than raising cycle speed.

Where the Power Goes

  • Heating — infrared or contact heaters bringing sheet to forming temperature, usually the single largest load
  • Drive and hydraulics — clamping, forming and trimming motion; hydraulic systems with fixed-displacement pumps waste energy as heat when idling
  • Compressed air and vacuum — vacuum forming, part ejection and stacking
  • Chilling — mold cooling and sheet cooling on the extrusion line

Design Choices That Cut Consumption

Servo drive on the motion side. The FS-8556 full servo cup machine replaces a continuously running hydraulic pump with servo-motors that draw power in proportion to the motion demanded. On a high-cycle line the saving compounds, because idle time between strokes costs almost nothing.

Hydraulic servo as a middle path. The HSS-8556 keeps hydraulic clamping force but controls pump output with servo, so pressure is generated when the stroke needs it rather than bypassing continuously.

Zoned heating with closed-loop control. Uniform sheet temperature is a quality requirement that also saves energy: over-heating one zone to compensate for another wastes power and distorts wall thickness.

Right-sized chilling. Mold cooling designed for the actual cycle, instead of a generously oversized chiller running at part load, cuts both capital and running cost.

Measure Before You Optimise

Three numbers tell most of the story: kWh per thousand cups, scrap rate, and compressor load. Scrap is an energy problem in disguise — every rejected cup contains the full energy of its sheet, heating and forming. Cutting scrap by a few percent often saves more energy than any single component upgrade.

What Longsheng Provides
